Privacy Law Challenges in Supreme Court
Transparency activists and journalists are taking the Modi government to India’s Supreme Court over the new privacy law, arguing the legislation will have a “chilling” effect on journalism and enable officials to withhold information of public interest. Four lawsuits are due to be heard on March 23, following criticism from media and activists that the government is diluting the 20-year-old Right to Information (RTI) law. The Reporters’ Collective, a Delhi-based journalists’ group, filed a court submission stating the law would hamper effective reporting. This case represents a significant governance challenge at the intersection of digital rights and democratic transparency. 3
