1. UPI Expands to Greece, Now Live in 10 Countries [L2 — Payments]

India’s Unified Payments Interface has officially launched in Greece, marking its expansion to 10 countries globally. The rollout, enabled through a partnership between Eurobank and NPCI International, allows users of UPI-enabled applications to make digital payments at merchants across Greece. UPI’s international footprint now spans Bhutan, Nepal, UAE, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, France, Peru, Oman, and Greece — a remarkable trajectory from a domestic rail to a global payments standard. Separately, NPCI has partnered with HSBC India and JPMorgan Payments to enable real-time FX settlement for international UPI payments, a critical step toward reducing friction in cross-border remittances and making UPI a viable rail for outbound payments beyond India’s borders.

2. NPCI Deploys AI for Fraud Detection in Digital Payments [L2 — Payments]

The National Payments Corporation of India has launched a pilot programme using Artificial Intelligence to track fraudulent transactions across the UPI network. The AI-driven system is designed to identify suspicious patterns — including mule account networks and coordinated fraud — in real time, addressing the growing sophistication of digital payment scams. This aligns with broader regulatory concerns flagged in the RBI’s latest Financial Stability Report. Economic Times

NPCI is also developing a new UPI AutoPay mandate management feature that would let users view all their recurring UPI mandates from any single UPI app, improving transparency and control over automatic deductions.

The Reserve Bank of India’s latest Financial Stability Report (June 2026) has classified AI-enabled cyberattacks as the “most important” near-term cyber threat to India’s banking and financial system. The RBI survey of financial institutions revealed that while banks have established robust practices in vulnerability assessment and penetration testing, cybersecurity awareness and training for employees need significant strengthening. The report also noted that India’s banking sector remains resilient, with gross NPAs touching a multi-decadal low of 1.8% as of March 2026. Telegraph India
