L2: UPI Biometric Payments Cross 600 Million Monthly Milestone
NPCI reported that biometric-authenticated UPI transactions surpassed 611 million in June 2026, with a cumulative value of ₹25,416 crore. On-device fingerprint and facial recognition authentication — eliminating the need for UPI PINs — is now operational across multiple banks and UPI apps, supporting both P2P and P2M transactions including RuPay Credit Card on UPI. This marks a significant inflection point in India’s move toward PIN-free digital payments, with the feature improving transaction success rates and reducing friction at merchant counters. Overall UPI processed 22.72 billion transactions worth ₹28.92 lakh crore in June, up 23% year-on-year, though slightly easing from May’s record of 23.2 billion transactions.

L7: TRAI Seeks IT Act Powers to Regulate Truecaller Over 1400/1600 Series
India’s telecom regulator TRAI has formally asked MeitY to grant it “authorised agency” status under the IT Act to regulate caller ID apps like Truecaller, escalating a long-running dispute over spam-labeling restrictions on the designated 1400 (telemarketing) and 1600 (banking/transactional) number series. TRAI’s 2025 framework barred third-party apps from tagging these numbers as spam, but Truecaller’s CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala publicly argued the policy has backfired: 81% of 1400-series and 79% of 1600-series calls now go unanswered daily (over 51 million calls), while user-initiated blocking of these numbers has surged 208% since October 2025. The clash raises fundamental questions about regulatory jurisdiction — whether caller ID platforms fall under telecom licensing or IT Act intermediary rules — and whether spam suppression mechanisms are actually undermining the trust they were designed to build.

L2: Paytm Exports Soundbox to Indonesia via Flip Partnership
In a significant cross-border DPI spinoff, Paytm has partnered with Indonesian fintech Flip to bring its Soundbox payment-confirmation technology to Indonesia. The device — which provides instant audio confirmation of digital payments — will be deployed via Flip Kasir, Flip’s merchant payments platform, with initial rollout in Jakarta. Paytm is supplying hardware and proprietary technology alongside a minority investment in Flip’s subsidiary DTK, which holds the local merchant acquiring license. The partnership positions India’s merchant payment stack as an export-ready product, aligning with Indonesia’s QRIS infrastructure and potentially paving the way for deeper India-Indonesia fintech cooperation including potential UPI interoperability.
