1. UPI-New Zealand Payment Linkage Announced During PM Modi’s Historic Visit (L2: Payments)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India and New Zealand will work towards integrating UPI with New Zealand’s fast-payment system, during his landmark two-day state visit to Auckland on July 10-11 — the first by an Indian Prime Minister in four decades. The two nations elevated their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership and signed 18 MoUs spanning trade, defence, digital payments, education, science, agriculture and maritime cooperation. Once implemented, UPI integration will enable faster, secure and seamless cross-border digital payments for businesses, tourists and the Indian diaspora in New Zealand. India has now struck payment linkage agreements with over ten countries, with Greece becoming the latest to enable UPI in June 2026. The announcement reinforces India’s growing ambition to make UPI the global default for real-time payments.

2. UPI Processes 22.72 Billion Transactions in June; Biometric Payments Cross 600 Million (L2: Payments)

NPCI released June 2026 data showing UPI processed 22.72 billion transactions worth ₹28.92 lakh crore — a 23.48% year-on-year increase in volume and 20.30% in value. While transaction volume moderated 2.1% from the all-time high recorded in May 2026, the average daily transaction count reached a fresh record. Notably, biometric-authenticated UPI payments (using fingerprint or facial recognition) crossed the 600 million mark for the first time — recording 611 million transactions worth ₹25,416 crore in June. Though still a small share of overall volume, the rapid adoption of device-based biometric authentication signals a shift away from PIN-based verification and aligns with NPCI’s push for frictionless, passwordless payment experiences.

3. Government Proposes Communication Technology Task Force for India’s 6G Push (L7: Trust/Telecom)

The Technology Advisory Group (TAG) of the Empowered Technology Group (ETG) convened its fourth meeting on July 10, 2026 under the chairmanship of Professor Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India. A key outcome was the proposal to establish a Communication Technology Task Force to coordinate India’s telecom R&D efforts with a focus on 6G, AI-native networks, and next-generation connectivity. The move builds on the existing six task forces under the Technology Innovation Group (TIG-6G), which cover spectrum allocation, device ecosystems, multi-platform networks, and research standards. India is partnering with Japan, Singapore, and Finland on global 6G standard-setting. Separately, TRAI reported India has crossed 300 million 5G subscribers, with Jio leading at 63% market share.

4. Haryana Launches ‘Digital Kavach’ Cybersecurity Initiative (L7: Trust)

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini launched the Haryana Digital Kavach initiative, first announced in the 2026-27 state budget, to build an integrated cybersecurity infrastructure for the state. The programme aims to provide 24x7 cyber surveillance, rapid incident response, and enhanced protection for all government department systems and public data. As government services increasingly move to digital platforms, the initiative addresses the growing attack surface targeting state-level e-governance infrastructure. Haryana joins a growing list of states building dedicated cyber defence capabilities, reflecting the decentralised approach to India’s national cybersecurity posture under CERT-In’s overarching framework.

5. CISF Signs MoU with IIITDM Kancheepuram for Cybersecurity Training (L7: Trust)

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the IIITDM Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu to conduct specialised cybersecurity training programmes for its personnel, effective July 20, 2026. The MoU, signed by CISF Director General M.V. Karthikeyan, aims to strengthen India’s critical infrastructure protection by equipping CISF personnel — who guard airports, metro systems, nuclear facilities, and government buildings — with advanced cybersecurity skills. The partnership reflects a broader trend of India’s security forces integrating cyber defence capabilities into their operational mandates as threat vectors increasingly move from physical to digital domains.
