ONDC Hits Record 12 Million Monthly Orders in July

The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has scaled to a fresh all-time high of 12 million orders in July, with daily orders peaking at approximately 430,000. Of these, 4.4 million orders came from the mobility domain, while the remaining 7.6 million were from non-mobility segments — food and beverages (1.7 million), grocery (1.4 million), and fashion (0.6 million), with the balance spread across on-network logistics, beauty and personal care, home and kitchen, and retail vouchers. The network now encompasses roughly 630,000 sellers and service providers across 600 cities, delivering to 1,200 cities nationwide. Separately, ONDC appointed Rohit Lohia as Chief Business Officer, bringing fintech and e-commerce experience to strengthen the open commerce ecosystem.

UPI User Base Reaches 55.49 Crore; FY26 Processes Record ₹314 Lakh Crore

The government informed Parliament this week that UPI’s onboarded user base reached 55.49 crore as of June 2026. In FY 2025-26, the network processed 24,161.69 crore transactions worth ₹314.23 lakh crore — the highest ever recorded in a financial year — representing roughly 30% volume growth over FY25’s 18,586.60 crore transactions (₹260.56 lakh crore). The government noted that RBI and NPCI have implemented tighter controls including risk-based transaction limits to combat financial fraud and unauthorised account access.

India Enforces Strict Data Localisation Rules for Telecom Sector

The Department of Telecommunications has begun enforcing stringent data localisation requirements for the telecom sector. The rules mandate that telecom data be stored and processed within Indian territory, a move that reinforces India’s broader digital sovereignty push. Separately, a new cloud data centre authorisation category has been introduced with a low barrier to entry — ₹10 lakh entry fee and zero annual authorisation fees — designed to integrate cloud data centres into the regulatory framework.

TRAI Satellite Communication Consultation Completes; D2D Deployment Set to Accelerate

TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti announced at the India Space Policy Conference 2026 that the consultation process on the framework for satellite communication network (SCN) authorisation and spectrum assignment has been completed, including an open house discussion earlier this month. The outcome is expected to provide regulatory certainty and facilitate seamless deployment of satellite communication networks, including direct-to-device (D2D) services. The framework is designed to promote competition, innovation, and enhanced digital connectivity across India.

Draft Telecom Rules Consolidate TV and Radio Regulation

The government released the Draft Telecommunications (Television, Radio and Associated Services) Rules, 2026, consolidating six separate sets of guidelines into a single rule book. The draft aims to streamline compliance and enhance ease of doing business for broadcasters, while providing existing licensees flexibility to opt for voluntary migration or continue under existing licences. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has invited public comments by 27th July 2026. PIB Fact Check has debunked claims circulating on social media that the rules would increase cable and DTH charges by 4–6 times, clarifying no such fee hike provisions exist.
