UPI Smashes All-Time Record — 23.66 Billion Transactions in July

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) released its July 2026 data on August 2, confirming that UPI processed a record 23.66 billion transactions worth ₹29.88 lakh crore — the highest-ever monthly volume. That translates to roughly 763 million payments per day, averaging ₹96,383 crore in daily throughput. Compared to June’s 22.72 billion transactions, volume grew 4.1% month-on-month, while value rose 3.3% from ₹28.92 lakh crore. Year-on-year, the growth is even starker — volume surged 22% and value jumped 19% from July 2025. The previous volume record was 23.20 billion set in May 2026. With UPI now powering nearly 85% of India’s digital payments, the numbers underline how deeply embedded the rail has become across every transaction tier — from street vendors to enterprise payouts.

India Stack Goes Global — 24 Nations Adopt UPI, DigiLocker, Aadhaar

India’s Digital Public Infrastructure is now being exported to 24 countries, with MoUs signed for adoption of key platforms including UPI, DigiLocker, and Aadhaar-based systems. DigiLocker has begun implementation in Kenya and Cuba, while UPI merchant payments are live in 10 international markets — Bhutan, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Qatar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, UAE, Cambodia, and now the Maldives. India is also in discussions with Laos, Seychelles, Armenia, Fiji, Guyana, Colombia, and Venezuela. The India Stack — UPI, DigiLocker, eKYC, eSign, Account Aggregator — is being positioned as a blueprint for the Global South’s digital governance needs, with over 8.5 billion digital identity authentications processed globally through Indian DPI systems.

Maldives Launches Favara-UPI Cross-Border Payment Corridor

On July 30, the Maldives Monetary Authority launched the Favara-UPI cross-border payment corridor, enabling instant money transfers from Maldivian mobile banking apps to UPI-linked accounts in India. The system integrates the Favara Instant Payment System with UPI, automatically converting Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) to Indian Rupees (INR). Initially available through Bank of Maldives Plc and Maldives Islamic Bank Plc, the corridor was developed with RBI and NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL). This is the latest in UPI’s international expansion, adding another Indian Ocean neighbour to the growing list of countries connected to India’s real-time payment rail.

Flipkart Enters Food Delivery on ONDC — Bengaluru Pilot from August 15

Walmart-owned Flipkart is preparing to launch an ONDC-based food delivery service in Bengaluru around August 15, marking a significant competitive move into India’s food delivery market. The service will be available within the Flipkart app and is built entirely on the Open Network for Digital Commerce protocol — meaning restaurants onboarded on ONDC can be discovered and ordered from through Flipkart. The key differentiator: Flipkart is offering restaurants a commission rate of around 10%, significantly lower than the 25-30% charged by market leaders Zomato and Swiggy. If restaurants migrate at scale, this could reshape the food delivery economics and is a strong validation of ONDC’s open-protocol approach to e-commerce — the same interoperability logic that made UPI the default payment rail.

Banks Propose “Yes-No” Prompt for High-Risk UPI Transfers to Curb Fraud

Indian banks have submitted proposals to the RBI suggesting a targeted “Yes-No” confirmation prompt for suspicious peer-to-peer UPI transactions, rather than the blanket one-hour delayed credit for all transactions above a threshold that was floated in an earlier RBI discussion paper. The idea is to add friction only when a transaction exhibits risk signals — unusual beneficiaries, first-time transfers, high-value P2P — while keeping the vast majority of routine payments instant. NPCI has reportedly expressed concerns that additional prompts could hurt UPI’s user-friendly appeal. The RBI is weighing the proposals and may issue draft guidelines soon. The debate highlights the central tension in India’s payments ecosystem: maintaining the zero-friction experience that drove adoption versus building safeguards against a rising tide of digital payment frauds — including deepfake impersonation, bogus “digital arrest” calls, and coerced UPI transfers.

GATE 2027 Makes DigiLocker Registration Mandatory

IIT Madras, the organising institute for GATE 2027, has announced that registration for the graduate aptitude test will require a verified DigiLocker account for all Indian nationals. The exam is scheduled for February 6-7 and 13-14, 20-21, 2027, with registrations opening August 14, 2026. DigiLocker will be used to pull candidate documents — degree certificates, mark sheets, identity proofs — directly from issuing authorities, reducing paperwork and eliminating the need for physical document uploads. This follows a broader trend of government examinations and admissions processes (including MHT CET 2026) making DigiLocker integration mandatory, further cementing the document layer of India Stack as infrastructure that citizens cannot opt out of.
