DPI Brief — November 02, 2026

Top DPI headlines for November 2, 2026 — Digi Yatra’s face-first boarding goes international, UPI books its biggest month ever just before the merchant meter starts running, and JEE Main registration makes DigiLocker the front door for lakhs of engineering aspirants.

[L1 · Identity] Digi Yatra goes international: face-based boarding trials live at seven airports

The international Digi Yatra trials flagged here on October 28 went live on November 1. Running through December 2026 at Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin, Mumbai, Chennai and Amritsar airports, they let eligible Indian nationals holding e-passports use facial authentication at terminal entry, security hold areas and boarding gates on select Air India and IndiGo international flights (Ministry of Civil Aviation statement, The Times of India). The credential mechanics are the interesting part: passengers create an e-passport-based verifiable credential in the Digi Yatra app by scanning the passport’s machine-readable zone, reading the embedded chip over NFC, capturing a selfie and verifying the details — the credential then sits in an on-device wallet. That is a hardware-chip-anchored identity, not just a face matched against a database, and the ministry is explicit that it complements rather than replaces immigration and airline document checks. Digi Yatra counts more than 2.65 crore users and over 11 crore journeys across 39 domestic airports, with 25 more airports to be equipped in 2027; trial feedback shapes a wider international rollout next year, with CEO Suresh Khadakbhavi pointing to interoperability with IATA One ID and ICAO’s Public Key Directory as the endgame. Worth watching, as always with voluntary biometric fast lanes: error and appeal handling at the gates, and whether participation data gets published.

[L2 · Payments] UPI’s biggest month: ₹1 lakh crore a day, booked just before the meter starts

UPI’s October numbers, released by NPCI on November 1, set records in every direction: 25.47 billion transactions worth ₹31.53 lakh crore — the first month ever above the ₹30 lakh crore mark, beating the previous record of ₹29.9 lakh crore set in May. Average daily value crossed ₹1 lakh crore for the first time, at roughly ₹1.01 lakh crore against about ₹98,000 crore in September, while daily volumes rose to 821 million from 802 million (Financial Express). Year-on-year, volumes grew 23% and value 16%, helped by festive-season spending and a 31-day month. The half-yearly ledger points the same way: 145 billion transactions worth ₹177 lakh crore in H1 FY27, up 27% and 20% respectively. The record lands at an awkward moment: the 0.4% MDR on merchant transactions above ₹2,000 — deferred by NPCI until after Diwali following representations from merchant associations, fintechs and payment providers — now falls due this month, and LocalCircles’ survey work projects the charge could shave around 4% off volumes and 10% off value. October is therefore both milestone and baseline: whatever the MDR does to UPI, November’s numbers will measure it against this peak.

[L3 · Documents] JEE Main 2027 registration makes DigiLocker the front door

India’s largest engineering entrance exam has quietly become a document-layer rollout. Registration for JEE Main 2027 Session 1 opened October 24 and runs until November 22, and the NTA’s public notice dated October 28 directs applicants to register using their personal DigiLocker, JanParichay or e-Pramaan (MeriPehchaan) credentials and to complete Aadhaar re-KYC through DigiLocker before filling the form — the first JEE cycle where MeriPehchaan login is mandatory (Careers360). Candidate details must match Class 10 certificates, with APAAR ID also in the mix. For lakhs of seventeen-year-olds, the first state digital identity they maintain deliberately will be built in service of an exam form. The design logic is sound — pulling verified marksheets and identity from the issuing board beats scanning plastic — but it concentrates a familiar risk: stale Aadhaar or DigiLocker data now surfaces as registration friction, and the re-KYC burden lands on families during the highest-stakes application season of the year. The window is open until November 22, with Session 1 exams scheduled for January 20–24 and 28, 2027.
